Malawi vice president, 9 others killed in a plane crash, president says

Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera announced that a small military plane carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima crashed, killing all 10 people on board.

Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others were killed in a plane crash in a mountainous area near the city of Mzuzu.

The plane, which was on a 45-minute flight from Lilongwe to Mzuzu, lost contact with air traffic control after being diverted due to bad weather.

The wreckage was found in a dense forest near a hill, with no survivors.

Chilima was traveling with former first lady Shanil Dzimbiri and three crew members to attend a funeral, and had recently returned from an official visit to South Korea.
