Fans sentenced to prison for racist insults directed at soccer star Vinícius Júnior in first-of-its-kind conviction

Three Valencia fans received eight-month prison sentences for racially insulting Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, marking Spain’s first conviction for racism in professional soccer.

Their identities were withheld, but they are banned from soccer stadiums for two years and must cover court costs. The incident occurred during a match at Mestalla Stadium in May 2023, which was temporarily halted due to the abuse.

This sparked widespread support for Vinícius and calls for action against racism. The fans were found guilty of a crime against moral integrity, aggravated by racial discrimination.
