World leaders condemn Israeli strike after 45 reported killed in Rafah tent camp

An Israeli airstrike on Sunday night killed dozens of people in Rafah, where displaced civilians were sheltering in tents. The strike caused a fire that swept through the camp, resulting in horrifying scenes of destruction. Images and videos on social media showed the area in flames, with distressed Palestinians fleeing and disturbing footage of severely burned bodies, including a man holding a headless child’s body.

The incident drew global condemnation, coming just after the United Nations’ top court ordered Israel to stop its offensive in southern Gaza. Qatar warned the attack could disrupt cease-fire negotiations, and Israel’s military prosecutor announced an investigation. The Israel Defense Forces stated they were targeting senior Hamas leaders but would review reports of civilian casualties. Adding to the tension, a shooting incident on the Egyptian border, near Rafah, was also under investigation. The Gaza health ministry reported at least 35 deaths, mostly women and children, with the casualty count potentially rising as first responders continued their work.
