Ukrainian drone strike on Russian nuclear radar sparks alarm in the West

Analysts warn Kyiv should avoid striking nuclear infrastructure after it carries out another attack on Russian territory

A Ukrainian drone strike on the Armavir radar station in Russia’s Krasnodar region has raised significant concerns in the West. The May 23 attack damaged the facility, which not only provides conventional air defense but is also a crucial part of Moscow’s nuclear warning system. Ukrainian officials confirmed their forces targeted the station, emphasizing its role in monitoring airspace over Ukraine and occupied Crimea. The radar had also been tracking long-range Atacms missiles supplied by the US to Ukraine earlier this year.

The strike is seen as a tactical success for Ukraine, compelling Russia to redeploy its air defense systems and signaling that no Russian military site is beyond reach. Mauro Gilli, a senior researcher at ETH Zurich’s Centre for Security Studies, noted that the attack highlighted vulnerabilities in Russian defenses and demonstrated Ukraine’s growing capabilities in precision strikes against critical infrastructure.
