In the unforgiving Namibian desert, a semi-nomadic tribe with peculiar sexual customs resides.

The Himba people hold marital and moral perspectives that are “completely different from the Western culture or the culture of the rest of the world”.

A documentary by African History TV reveals: “For the Himba people, the husbands giving their wives to visitors to have sex with is considered the highest form of hospitality”. This unique custom is believed to offer a “warm welcome” to strangers and eradicates the type of sexual jealousy that can plague more traditional marriages.

Among the Himba, women shoulder a great deal of responsibilities. They often undertake more labour-intensive tasks than men and boys in the tribe such as caring for livestock, maintaining the traditional red clay houses, cooking, cleaning and looking after children, reports the Daily Star.

The Himba culture remains relatively isolated from the rest of Namibian society. The estimated 50,000 Himba people lead a very traditional life, and one small group the OvaHimba maintain a hunter-gatherer lifestyle that hasn’t altered in tens of thousands of years.
