Hotelier Curtis Bashaw will challenge Rep. Andy Kim in the general election for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat.
The Associated Press projects Bashaw will defeat Mendham Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner for the Republican nomination. Menendez, facing federal bribery charges, plans to run as an independent if acquitted. “It’s time for a political outsider who can deliver results,” Bashaw stated post-election.
Despite the win, Bashaw faces a tough battle in November, as Republicans haven’t won a New Jersey Senate race since 1972. Notably, Bashaw was not endorsed by former President Donald Trump, who supported Serrano Glassner.
