Tornadoes strike central US, claiming at least 18 lives

A series of deadly storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc across the South and the Great Plains in the US over Memorial Day weekend, resulting in at least 18 fatalities and extensive power outages. Arkansas was particularly hard hit, with eight deaths reported, as confirmed by Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Texas’s Cooke County experienced seven storm-related deaths, while Oklahoma’s Mayes County and Louisville, Kentucky, each reported two and one deaths, respectively.

The violent weather left over 334,000 customers without electricity in Kentucky, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, Tennessee, and Arkansas. Severe tornado warnings were in effect for Texas and Oklahoma on Saturday night as the storms surged through the southern states, causing significant damage and disruptions. These extreme weather events underscore the urgent need for preparedness and robust infrastructure to mitigate the impacts of such natural disasters.
