Russian space nuke would destroy satellites with blast ‘visible from Earth’

DAILY STAR

A Russian nuke in space would destroy satellites over time and an explosion would be ‘visible to the public,’ according to experts.

It comes after claims from US officials that Russia has developed a space-based anti-satellite nuclear weapon. That followed Russia sending a Soyuz-2-1v rocket with a classified military payload into space.

An emergency meeting of US leaders has now been arranged following the “serious national security threat,” as we reported yesterday (February 14).

According to ABC7, two sources said the weapons are potentially not to be used on Earth, but rather to destroy satellites.

And US officials have been trying to highlight increasingly aggressive Russian space activity for years, from rogue satellites to space ramming weapons, according to Defenseone.com.

The title reports the US military has been looking at ways to harden its most important satellites against a nuclear blast in space, including using radio waves to clear the radiation from orbit.
