Obama on his media diet: “I watch sports, mostly”
Former President Obama dropped by a gathering of about 80 digital content creators — including stars of TikTok and Instagram Reels — during the campaign fundraiser for President Biden in L.A. on Saturday, and he shed some light on his media consumption habits, revealing that he primarily watches sports due to the current slash-and-burn nature of other media.
Obama acknowledged that many young progressives may be skeptical of President Biden, but he argued that Biden shares their fundamental beliefs.
Comparing Biden’s presidency to FDR’s use of radio and JFK’s use of television, Obama’s embrace of social media during his presidency earned him the title of “the first social media president.”
Despite the growing importance of media consumption in modern society, Obama emphasized the need for critical thinking and skepticism when engaging with information and entertainment media.
“I need you guys to use your influence, and it doesn’t have to be boring. I don’t expect you to have a bunch of charts and graphs,” Obama added.
“I understand folks are swiping or scrolling, and you’ve got to use humor and you’ve got to use other things that are engaging people.”
