✔ Nigeria’s main labor unions, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have initiated an indefinite strike due to the government’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage.
The strike has resulted in the shutdown of the national power grid after union members drove away operators and closed at least six substations, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Airline operations across the country have been disrupted, with Ibom Air and United Nigeria suspending flights as airports were closed and workers withdrew their services.
The strike is a response to President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which have led to high inflation and a cost-of-living crisis, further aggravated by the removal of petrol subsidies that cost the government $10 billion last year.
