More than 100 people are feared dead following a devastating landslide that struck the village of Kaokalam in Papua New Guinea’s remote Enga province early Friday morning. The landslide hit around 3 a.m., burying the village and causing extensive destruction. Initial reports from local residents suggest that the death toll could be much higher, although official figures have yet to be confirmed.
Prime Minister James Marape expressed his condolences and stated that an emergency response is underway. Efforts are being made to send disaster officials, the PNG Defense Force, and the Department of Works and Highways to the affected area to begin relief work, recover bodies, and rebuild infrastructure. Videos on social media have shown residents desperately searching for survivors and retrieving bodies from the debris. The full scale of the disaster remains unclear as authorities continue to assess the situation.
