Last month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex traveled to Nigeria, partly due to Meghan Markle’s recent discovery of her Nigerian heritage. During their visit to Iwo, Meghan was honored with a traditional Chieftaincy Title by the Oluwu of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi. As part of this ceremony, she was also given the Yoruba name Adetokunbo, further solidifying her connection to the region.
In a letter to Oba Akanbi, obtained by the Western Post, Meghan expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome and the honor bestowed upon her. “Your Imperial Majesty, Thank you for your warm welcome to Nigeria. I am deeply humbled by your blessing of the traditional Yoruba name, Adetokunbo.
I treasure the name and appreciate your trust in me to carry it with grace and dignity,” she wrote. Meghan highlighted the significance of their visit, emphasizing the opportunity it provided to explore her heritage and share it with her children. She concluded her heartfelt message, signed as Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, with a hopeful note about returning to Nigeria in the future.
