Israeli airstrikes on Rafah kill 30 after Hamas rocket attacks on Tel Aviv

Medics in the southern Gaza city say the strikes hit an area of tents being used by displaced people.

TEL AVIV — In a dramatic escalation of violence, Israeli airstrikes on the southern Gaza city of Rafah have killed at least 30 people, according to Palestinian medics and the Hamas-run government media office. The strikes came in response to Hamas launching rockets towards Tel Aviv for the first time in months, marking a significant intensification in the ongoing conflict.

The airstrikes reportedly targeted tents set up for displaced people in Rafah, causing widespread destruction. Footage from the scene showed a landscape of devastation, with debris scattered and makeshift shelters obliterated.

Hamas officials condemned the Israeli attack, stating it struck “an area crowded with hundreds of thousands of displaced people.” The militant group had earlier fired a barrage of rockets towards Tel Aviv, breaking a period of relative calm in the region.
