Iran opens presidential race registration to replace late Raisi

Iran has commenced the formal registration process for presidential candidates ahead of a snap election set for June 28, following the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash earlier this month. Originally scheduled for 2025, the election was expedited due to Raisi’s untimely demise on May 19. Registration, which began at the interior ministry early Wednesday, will be open for five days, according to the official IRNA news agency.

In the wake of the crash, which also claimed the lives of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and other officials, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed Vice President Mohammad Mokhber as the caretaker president. Despite the urgency, initial reports indicated that around 30 individuals submitted applications on the first day, but none met the basic eligibility criteria for candidacy. The nation now waits to see which qualified candidates will emerge to steer Iran through this unexpected political transition.
