John Bolton, the ex-national security advisor to former President Donald Trump, raged against the GOP frontrunner in a recent interview — claiming he is “fundamentally ignorant” regarding foreign policy.
Bolton joined Morning Joe on MSNBC Wednesday morning to discuss his thoughts on a potential Trump second-term and what that would entail for the country. Network anchor Mika Brzezinski asked Bolton if Democrats should take Trump’s rhetoric seriously as the general elections nears.
“Yeah, I think Trump actually says what, what comes to mind is a very astute person once said to me, he does not have a filter between his brain and his mouth,” Bolton noted. “And so when he, for example, threatens to get out of NATO, as he did during his first term and has done since then, I think people better believe it. And I think that would be a catastrophic mistake for American national security and the security of the West as a whole. ”
Bolton then reacted to Trump’s comments last week at a rally where he bashed NATO, claiming it would not assist the U.S. if the country was attacked by a rival power.
“In the clip you just ran, he said several things that are simply incorrect, and it reveals an important trait about Trump on national security issues and many others,” Bolton added.
