At least 15 Catholic worshippers were tragically killed in a horrific attack on Sunday in the village of Essakane, Burkina Faso. Gunmen targeted the community as they gathered for prayers in the conflict-ridden northern region, according to church officials.
Abbot Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, vicar-general of the Catholic Diocese of Dori, confirmed the attack as a “terrorist attack,” reporting that 12 individuals lost their lives at the scene, with three others succumbing to their injuries while receiving medical treatment.
Details surrounding the attack remain scant, with no group claiming responsibility. However, suspicions have been raised concerning jihadist groups known for their frequent assaults on remote communities and security forces in the northern region.
Sawadogo issued a statement calling for prayers for the deceased, the healing of the wounded, and the conversion of those perpetrating violence in the country. The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Burkina Faso, where approximately half the country remains beyond government control due to the relentless activities of extremist groups.
