Cucumbers recalled in 14 states due to salmonella risk

The FDA is investigating to see if tainted cucumber sample is related to an ongoing salmonella outbreak that has sickened 141.

Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. of Delray, Florida, has issued a recall of whole cucumbers shipped to 14 states between May 17 and May 21, 2024, due to salmonella contamination.

The recall follows a positive salmonella test by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture; affected states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Salmonella infection can lead to severe and potentially fatal health issues, especially in vulnerable populations, with symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

The FDA is conducting whole genome sequencing to determine if the contaminated cucumbers are linked to an ongoing salmonella outbreak, which has sickened 141 people so far, with the food source yet to be identified.
