Convicted Trump seeks to lift gag order following guilty verdict

Trump, who violated the order ten times, cited his upcoming debate against Biden as one reason why it should be removed.

Donald Trump’s attorneys have requested Judge Juan Merchan to lift the gag order on Trump, arguing it’s unnecessary after his conviction for falsifying business records related to his 2016 presidential campaign.

Attorneys Todd Blanche and Emil Bove argued that the gag order is no longer justified and restricts Trump’s First Amendment rights, especially as he remains a leading candidate for the 2024 presidential election.

They cited President Joe Biden’s public comments about the case, an event with Biden surrogates outside the courthouse, and the upcoming CNN debate as reasons to lift the gag order.

The gag order, which Trump violated ten times during the trial, prohibits him from discussing witnesses, jurors, court staff, prosecutors, and their families, as well as those of Judge Merchan.
