The tragic incident unfolded in Nanjing’s Yuhuatai district, a bustling urban area housing over eight million residents, located approximately 162 miles (260km) northwest of Shanghai. Emergency responders sprang into action upon receiving alerts at 04:40 local time (20:40 GMT) on Friday, mobilizing a force of twenty-five fire engines and 130 firefighters to combat the inferno. By 06:00 (22:00 GMT), the flames were quenched, and the arduous search and rescue operation concluded by 14:00.
Among the 44 individuals hospitalized for treatment, one remains in critical condition while another sustains serious injuries, according to officials. Nanjing’s mayor, Chen Zhichang, expressed heartfelt condolences and extended apologies to the grieving families during a press briefing.
