At least nine people, including a child, were tragically killed, and around 50 others were injured when a section of a stage collapsed during an election rally in Mexico’s Nuevo León state. The incident occurred as presidential candidate Jorge Alvarez Maynez was addressing supporters in San Pedro Garza Garcia. Although Maynez escaped unharmed, several members of his team were injured. The collapse, reportedly caused by a sudden gust of wind, was captured on video, showing panic and chaos as people fled the collapsing structure.
Governor Samuel Garcia confirmed that the victims included eight adults and one child, with three of the injured requiring surgery. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed condolences, and candidates Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez canceled or suspended campaign events in light of the tragedy. The incident adds to the somber atmosphere of what has been a particularly violent election season in Mexico, with hundreds of public servants, politicians, and candidates having been threatened or murdered leading up to the June 2nd election, according to a recent survey.
