Burkina Faso junta extends military rule by five years

The military junta in Burkina Faso will retain power for another five years, delaying the country’s return to democracy. This decision follows the signing of a new charter after national consultations in the capital, Ouagadougou, on Saturday. Civil society representatives, security and defense forces, and lawmakers in the transitional assembly took part in the discussions, which were largely boycotted by most political parties.

Colonel Moussa Diallo, chairman of the organizing committee of the national dialogue process, announced that the transition period would last 60 months from July 2, 2024. He also mentioned that coup leader and acting president Ibrahim Traore could participate in any elections held at the end of this transition period.
