Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso – Burkina Faso’s military government has announced the extension of junta rule for another five years. The decision, made public by the state-owned broadcaster, includes a provision allowing the country’s ruler, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, to contest in the next presidential election.
Captain Traoré, who seized power in a coup nearly two years ago, initially pledged to restore civilian government by July 1, 2023. However, this new development sees Burkina Faso following the path of neighboring Mali, which has also extended its period of military governance.
The announcement came on Saturday following a national consultation meeting in the capital city, Ouagadougou. This decision is expected to have significant implications for the political landscape in Burkina Faso and potentially for the broader West African region.
