These issues have persisted since December following his treatment for prostate cancer. Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder clarified that this procedure is unrelated to Austin’s cancer diagnosis and does not impact his positive prognosis. During Austin’s temporary indisposition, Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks will assume his duties.
Austin, aged 70, has faced health challenges since his prostate cancer surgery, which led to a prolonged two-week hospital stay due to complications. His handling of the situation drew criticism for not promptly informing the president or Congress about his diagnosis and hospitalization. Despite these past issues, the current procedure is a routine step in managing his health and ensuring his continued capacity to serve in his critical role.
