Afghan-born man remanded in custody over Mannheim knife attack

A 25-year-old man born in Afghanistan has been remanded in custody by a German court on suspicion of attempted murder following a knife attack at an event organized by a group opposing “political Islam.” The incident occurred on Friday in the central square of Mannheim, resulting in six victims, including a police officer who remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries sustained while trying to intervene. Officials have not provided information regarding the motive behind the attack.

The suspect, who has lived in Germany since 2014, is married with two children and resides in the town of Heppenheim. Police searched his apartment on Friday night, recovering digital devices currently under evaluation. The man, who was shot and wounded by police, is in the hospital and unable to be questioned at this time. Authorities have not disclosed his citizenship or immigration status, nor how he came to Germany. The event was organized by Pax Europa, a group that raises awareness about the perceived dangers of “political Islam.”
