West Virginia has the highest share of smokers in the U.S., with the largest percentage being those aged 45 to 64 years old, according to a new report.
A study by vape manufacturer YoCan looked at data from the CDC and America’s Health Rankings and found that 20.47% of adults in West Virginia say they smoke some days or daily. The analysis found that 26.2% of adults ages 45 to 64 smoke some days or daily, while 22.6% of adults 18 to 44, and 12.6% of those 65 and older say the same.
Most of the other top 10 states are in the midwest or southeast regions of the U.S. They are, in order: Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Louisiana, Missouri, Indiana and Oklahoma.
In all of the top 10 states, the highest percentage of adults who smoke lie in the age range of 45 to 64 and the lowest percentage are 65 and over.
Kentucky had the lowest percentage of 18-to-44-year-olds who smoked, with nearly 15% saying they smoke some days or daily, while Arkansas had the highest percentage, with just over 19%.
The lowest percentage of 45-to-64-year-olds is tied between Missouri and Oklahoma, both with 18.8%.
