Crazed 3500-strong army of monkeys invades town leaving terrified people fleeing

An army of monkeys has left a town destitute after chasing away its locals.

The streets of Lopburi, Thailand, have become overrun with apes after some 3,500 animals descended upon the city. Shops now lay closed and shuttered and once-bustling districts are now almost completely devoid of human visitors.

Lopburi was once a tourist hotspot, with holidaymakers flocking to see the town’s wild macaques. However the seemingly adorable creatures now run amok through the city while many humans choose to give it a wide berth.

Those who have stayed have been forced to barricade their homes. Local Kuljira Taechawattanawanna told AFP: “We live in a cage but the monkeys live outside.”

Taechawattanawanna added she had covered her terrace in a bid to stop the ape army ransacking her property in search of food. There are even no-go zones throughout the city where monkey gangs have been spotted battling for supremacy.

Locals initially attempted to keep the monkeys from attacking by feeding them junk food, but the plan did not work – if anything, some of the monkeys became more violent. The sugary drinks and snacks made the creatures more hyper-sexual and prone to aggressive behaviour.
