What Ron DeSantis exit means for Donald Trump’s 2024 chances

I NEWS

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has suspended his Republican presidential campaign, paving the way for Donald Trump and Nikki Haley to go head-to-head for the GOP nomination.

Mr DeSantis, 45, had been widely seen as the most promising alternative to Mr Trump ahead of the election in November, but the former president has maintained an iron grip on the Republican electorate.

“It’s clear to me that a majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” Mr DeSantis said on Sunday, two days before the first-in-the-nation Republican primary contest in New Hampshire.

He finished in second place in last week’s caucuses in Iowa, 30 percentage points behind Mr Trump and just ahead of former South Carolina Governor Ms Haley.

Who is Ron DeSantis endorsing?

In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, Mr DeSantis endorsed Mr Trump while delivering a parting shot at Ms Haley.

“He has my endorsement because we can’t go back to the old Republican guard of yesteryear: a re-packaged form of warmed-over corporatism that Nikki Haley represents,” he said.
