On Wednesday in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital, Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of the African National Congress (ANC), was sworn in as president for a five-year term. Ramaphosa, 71, was re-elected by the National Assembly on June 14, securing 283 votes against Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters, who received 44 votes. According to the South African Constitution, the president-elect must assume office within five days of the election.
