South Africa’s ANC talks with 5 parties over possible coalition

South Africa’s African National Congress (ANC) has initiated talks with five other parties about forming a government, following an election where the ANC lost its 30-year majority but remained the largest party.

ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri confirmed “exploratory” discussions with the Democratic Alliance, Economic Freedom Fighters, and three smaller parties. Efforts to engage former President Jacob Zuma’s MK Party have been unsuccessful.

The ANC seeks a “national unity” government, considering options beyond a formal coalition, including a minority government or even joining the opposition if necessary for the nation’s best interest.
