School officials are reviving an old weapon in the war against LGBTQ kids — and it’s working

As a record number of anti-LGBTQ state bills are introduced across the country, school districts are following suit with their own restrictive policies.

Schools across the U.S. have denied students entry to events like prom and graduation due to dress code policies, which advocates argue disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ students and girls.

In Florida, 16-year-old Sophie Savidge was barred from prom for wearing a suit, as the school’s dress code mandated dresses for “ladies.”

In Alabama, a transgender student was denied prom entry for wearing a dress, with school policy giving administrators discretion over “appropriate clothing or appearance.”

The ACLU of Mississippi filed a federal complaint against Harrison County School District for preventing a transgender girl from wearing a dress, citing a dress code requiring attire “consistent with biological sex,” reflecting broader trends in GOP-led states to enforce restrictive dress codes amid rising anti-LGBTQ legislation.
