Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has stated that the Rafah border crossing, essential for aid into Gaza, can only operate if Israel relinquishes control to Palestinians. Israel seized Gaza’s border with Egypt, including the crossing, last month.
The Rafah crossing is the sole external lifeline for Gaza’s 2.3 million residents. Shoukry emphasized that the crossing requires Palestinian administration. His comments follow an Israel-Egypt-US meeting in Cairo, where Egypt reiterated its opposition to Israeli control.
An Egyptian source mentioned proposals for the crossing’s management involving the Palestinian Authority and a European Union mission, with Egypt solely managing the Egyptian side.
