Marian Robinson, mother of Michelle Obama, dies at 86

Marian Robinson, the mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, passed away peacefully at the age of 86, her family announced on Friday. The family expressed their deep sense of loss and uncertainty about moving forward without her. Marian, born in 1937 and raised on Chicago’s South Side as one of seven children, trained as a teacher and worked as a secretary. She married Fraser Robinson, with whom she had two children, Michelle and Craig. Fraser passed away in 1991.

Marian Robinson became a familiar figure when she moved into the White House in 2008 after her son-in-law, Barack Obama, was elected President. Initially hesitant to leave Chicago, she was eventually persuaded by her family to join them in Washington, D.C. Her presence in the White House was cherished, and she played a significant role in supporting the Obama family during their years in office.
