Mayor of London Sadiq Khan wants to bring the Super Bowl to the U.K.’s capital.
Speaking to the Athletic, Khan said he’s determined to get the NFL’s flagship fixture to London as a way of solidifying its status as the “sporting capital of the world.”
The soccer Champions League final is already taking place in Wembley Stadium this Saturday. But Khan’s got his eyes on a bigger prize.
“The Super Bowl is really important for us,” he said. “We have a number of American football games and I want it to come here because we want American sports fans in Europe to come to London to watch them, not just go to America.”
The Super Bowl has served as the final game of every NFL season since 1966. It’s usually played on the second Sunday in February, and in 2025 is slated to take place at Caesars Superdome in Louisiana.
While London has hosted NFL regular games since 2007, the Super Bowl has never been staged outside the U.S. Its usual 6.30 p.m. Eastern Time start and four-hour duration would see London fans leaving the stadium bleary-eyed at 3.30 a.m.
Khan also called for the WWE’s WrestleMania, a professional wrestling event celebrating its 40th year, to be held in the U.K. for the first time.
