Six British passengers are in intensive care in Bangkok following a severe turbulence incident on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore, which resulted in the death of an elderly British passenger, Geoffrey Kitchen, due to a suspected heart attack. The turbulence struck the flight over Myanmar, causing the plane to abruptly rise and plunge multiple times, violently throwing passengers around the cabin and resulting in serious injuries for several dozen people. A total of 104 passengers were taken to hospitals in Bangkok after the emergency landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with 20 in ICUs, including six Britons.
Among the injured is Mia Stevenson, a 22-year-old music student from Bristol, who described the terrifying experience of being thrown headfirst into the aircraft’s ceiling. Despite the chaos, she managed to return to her seat and secure her seat belt. Stevenson expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased passenger and noted the rarity of such severe turbulence. This incident highlights increasing concerns about the rise of clear air turbulence due to climate change, with studies showing a significant increase in the duration and severity of these events over recent decades.
