Norway, Ireland, Spain to recognise Palestinian state

Norway, Ireland, and Spain have announced plans to formally recognize Palestine as a state next week to promote peace in the Middle East, prompting Israel to recall its envoys from these countries. Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Ireland’s Prime Minister Simon Harris, and Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made the announcements, emphasizing that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace. They hope this recognition will support moderate forces and contribute to ending the cycle of violence in the region.

The recognition, set for May 28, has faced criticism from Israel, which argues it will lead to more instability and terrorism. Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz warned that such recognition turns these countries into pawns for Iran and Hamas. Despite the controversy, this move by Norway, Ireland, and Spain is seen as a significant diplomatic step. It reflects growing frustration with the ongoing conflict and aims to bolster efforts for a peaceful resolution. Saudi Arabia and Jordan have welcomed the decision, while Palestinian leaders and groups like Hamas have praised it as a step toward justice and freedom.
