Russia designates ‘LGBT’ movement’ as extremist and terrorist organizations

Russia has officially added the “LGBT movement” to its list of extremist and terrorist organizations, in accordance with a decision by the country’s Supreme Court last November.

This move, reported by state media on Friday, has raised concerns among representatives of the gay and transgender community, who fear it could result in arrests and prosecutions.

The list, managed by the agency Rosfinmonitoring, includes over 14,000 individuals and entities deemed extremist or terrorist, ranging from Al Qaeda to U.S. tech giant Meta and associates of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

According to state news agency RIA, the new designation specifically targets the “international LGBT social movement and its structural units.”
