Special prosecutor in Trump case resigns, enabling ex-girlfriend to avoid charges

The special prosecutor in the case in Georgia against former President Donald Trump and others has resigned.

Nathan Wade, the special prosecutor, offered his resignation in a letter on March 15 to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, saying he was doing so “in the interest of democracy.”

Ms. Willis, who hired Mr. Wade, accepted the resignation in a separate missive, WSB-TV reported.

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee ruled earlier Friday that either Mr. Wade or Ms. Willis had to remove themselves from the case, which involves charges of election interference against President Trump and 18 others.

Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade created an “appearance of impropriety,” the judge found, pointing to them having a relationship, Ms. Willis not having records to support her claims she did not benefit financially from the relationship after Mr. Wade paid for multiple trips they took, and Mr. Wade not being truthful in his divorce case.

“An outsider could reasonably think that the district attorney is not exercising her independent professional judgment totally free of any compromising influences. As long as Wade remains on the case, this unnecessary perception will persist,” Judge McAfee said.

Ms. Willis and Mr. Wade have said their relationship ended in the past.
